Description

New England is beautiful at any time of year, but especially so in the autumn. The fall foliage here is rightly famous - people come from all over the world to ‘leaf peep’, admiring the region’s national parks and forests in all their autumnal splendour. Marvel at shades of orange, crimson and gold as you travel through Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, stopping to explore historic towns and taste seasonal produce from local farmers. Take in New England’s beauty by road (including the famous Kancamagus Scenic Byway), on foot and by boat, as you cruise across the waters of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.

Depart Boston to discover Portland’s charming boutiques and lighthouses, then Nova Scotia’s historical sites and Charlottetown’s coppery shores before a Québec City arrival.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Boston

Join your tour group at the hotel.

Day 2: Boston

This morning, you’ll enjoy a city tour of Boston with a local guide, taking in highlights such as the site of the Boston Tea Party, Back Bay and Beacon Hill, ending at Quincy Market. You are free to explore at leisure for the rest of the day.

Day 3: Boston - Killington

Leaving Boston this morning, you’ll visit Lexington Battle Green, where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired in 1775. Continue to the Minute Man National Historic Park in Concord before arriving in Woodstock. Named the ‘prettiest small town in America’, Woodstock has benefitted from its connections with the wealthy Rockefeller family, who helped to maintain its traditional architecture. Next, pay a visit to nearby Billings Farm, a dairy farm that’s also regarded as one of the finest outdoor museums in the country. Stay two nights in the charming resort of Killington, nestled amongst Vermont’s Green Mountains National Forest.

Day 4: Stowe - Montpelier

Today you’ll drive to the mountain resort of Stowe to see the Von Trapp Lodge and learn the real story behind the family’s connection with ‘The Sound of Music’. In the afternoon continue to Morse Maple farm, where the Morse family have been producing maple syrup for generations. You’ll have a chance to taste their sweet products (and perhaps buy a bottle or two to stash in your suitcase) before you travel on to the state capital, Montpelier, for a tour of the Vermont State House. (Vermont State house is only open on weekdays, so therefore is available on selected departures).

Day 5: Lake Winnipesaukee

Leaving Killington, cross the border into New Hampshire and arrive on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state. Step aboard the historic Mount Washington steamer for a scenic cruise amongst the hundreds of islands and forested bays of the lake, all decorated in their finest fall colours. The afternoon is at leisure at Weirs Beach before you head on to our hotel.

Day 6: Kancamagus Scenic Byway - North Conway

Today is a real highlight: drive the 34-mile Kancamagus Scenic Byway through the White Mountains National Forest. Considered one of the very best areas to view the stunning autumn foliage, you’ll be surrounded on all sides by rolling hills painted in red, orange and gold. You’ll stop for a while to stretch your legs with an easy half-mile hike to the waterfalls at Diana’s Baths. This evening is at leisure in North Conway.

Day 7: Cannon Mountain

This morning you make your way north, travelling through Crawford Notch State Park to Bretton Woods, where the country’s post-war monetary system was created in 1945. Stop for lunch at Flume Gorge, where you’ll find cascading waterfalls and one of the state’s oldest covered bridges. Continuing to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, take the cable car to the 4,800ft summit, with its spectacular views that sweep across four US states and up to the Canadian province of Quebec. Admire a patchwork of autumn colour from up here, as you look out across mountains, hills and woodland. (Please note that if the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is unable to operate due to inclement weather, they will try to secure availability on the Conway Scenic Railroad as an alternative.)

Day 8: Kennebunkport

Leaving the mountains behind you, there’s a dramatic change of scenery as you arrive on the rugged Maine coastline. Head to the city of Portland, where you have some time at leisure to explore the redeveloped Old Port and Arts District. In the afternoon, arrive at Kennebunkport. This charming little town was the summer home of President Bush, where he hosted world leaders from Margaret Thatcher to President Gorbachev. The town has a proud shipbuilding heritage, and you’ll see plenty of grand ships and schooners bobbing in the harbour (plus some equally grand mansions, built by sea captains more than 150 years ago).

Day 9: Kennebunkport - Boston

Stop in Salem for a walking tour before returning back to Boston. Say goodbye to your tour group for your onward travel.
