Born in 300 AD as Naniwa, ancient Osaka has survived an earthquake and two fires to grow into one of Japan's largest, most prosperous cities. The graceful intersection of elongated canals and several parks makes for a beautiful city and a gorgeous waterfront.

Takamatsu is a port city on Japan's Shikoku Island. It's known for the sprawling Ritsurin Garden, with a teahouse, koi ponds, landscaped hills and pine forests. To the east, atop Mount Yashima, Yashima-ji Temple offers panoramic views over the Seto Inland Sea. Nearby, Shikoku Village is an open-air museum with a collection of historical buildings from around the island. To the south are the hot springs of Shionoe.

A bustling metropolis dotted with leafy parks and ancient shrines, Hiroshima is a city with deep historical significance that has its eyes on the future. From a distance, you can tell theres something special about Beppu. Pillars of steam rise from this sun-drenched city, attesting to its countless hot springs ? Beppu generates more spring water than any other city in Japan. Cruise to Beppu to visit one of the many onsen (hot-spring spas) ? there are over 2,000 here. You can also find mud baths at Beppu Onsen Hoyo Land Konya Jigoku and sand baths at Beppu-Kaihama Beach. Or head out of town for a wilder version of hot springs and see the Eight Hells of Beppu: Theyre too hot to bathe in but breathtaking to see. Once youre feeling unwound, channel your inner kid at Takasakiyama Monkey Park, where monkeys run wild at the base of Mount Takasaki.

Hagi is a coastal city in Japan. The ruins of Hagi Castle sit in Shizuki Park, known for its spring cherry blossoms and the forested slopes of Mt. Shizuki. Nearby is Kikugahama beach. The Castle Town area's narrow streets are lined with samurai-era residences. Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and ceramics are on display at the Hagi Uragami Museum. Farther east, Toko-ji Temple is known for its collection of stone lanterns.

Ulsan, officially the Ulsan Metropolitan City, is South Korea's seventh-largest metropolitan city and the eighth-largest city overall, with a population of over 1.1 million inhabitants. It is located in the south-east of the country, neighboring Busan to the south and facing Gyeongju to the north.

Matsue is a city on the northwest coast of Japan's main island. Matsue Castle is one of Japan's few largely intact 17th-century castles. The surrounding park is known for Jozan Inari Shrine's fox statues. Across the castle moat, Shiomi Nawate street is lined with Edo-period samurai residences. The Lafcadio Hearn Former Residence was the Greek writer's local home. Pleasure boats ply the waters of vast Lake Shinji.
